Skill Cues: Release ball with a high arc
Angle of ball release is a significant
factor in determining successful trajectories. Due to individual dynamics
(height of player, shoulder angle) and varying positioning on court, research
has identified that there is not one set angle, which will ensure a successful
shot (Knudson, 1993). However, a range of desirable angles between 49-55
degrees increases the probability of the ball passing cleanly through the
basket (Knudson, 1993). This range is aimed for mid range shots. Players should
increase the angle range if positioned closer to ring ( Blazevich, 2013).
Coaches could film (using Speed Clock)
players’ jump shots and with the use of protractors be able to measure the
players’ angle of release. Comparison between these measurements and the
outlined desired range could provide indication of personalized skill cues. For
example, if the player’s shots are identified as being too flat (evidenced by rebounding
straight off of the basket), the coach could suggest lifting the shooting arm
to be vertical, enabling the optimal starting position to release the ball at
the intended angle.
